We seem to be a society of extremes. Our society wants to believe that either something is healthy for you, or that it is dangerous and should be avoided at all costs.
The problem with this line of thinking is that many things in life do not fall into such a neat category. Is a glass of red wine, also labeled carcinogenic by the same medical community, healthy for you? Many claim this to be true. How about a case a day? Obviously not. Continue Reading…

Stronger bones, a better immune system, protection from some cancers, lower blood pressure, clearer skin, and a healthier brain. These are just a few of the apparent benefits of the strangest of vitamins—vitamin D. Unlike all other vitamins, vitamin D is made by our bodies, but it requires sunshine.
The problem is, we’re just not getting as much sun as we used to or enough to make the vitamin D our bodies need. We spend too much time indoors, and when we do go outdoors, we’re using sunblock, which blocks the ultraviolet rays that create vitamin D. Continue Reading…

The importance of vitamin D deficiency is finally gaining increasing attention. This nutrient deficiency is critical, causing an estimated 85,500 extra cancer deaths in the U.S. each year. Because of this, the deadly recommendation to avoid sunshine that people are given, I am going to cover the importance of this nutrient in depth.
Vitamin D deficiency is common. In fact, a review in the Mayo Clinic Journal showed that approximately 36% of healthy young adults and 57% of general medicine inpatients in the U.S. have inadequate levels of vitamin D. Vitamin D deficiency is especially common in people with chronic pain. Continue Reading…

Vitamin D and Metabolic Syndrome
An exciting new study regarding vitamin D and Metabolic Syndrome shows that more than half of obese people with the syndrome have low levels of vitamin D.
*It has been estimated that 25% of the entire U.S. population suffers from metabolic syndrome. It is defined as a cluster of physiological measurements such as high blood pressure (hypertension), abdominal obesity, high triglyceride levels, low HDL (good cholesterol) levels, high blood-sugar levels, and insulin resistance that are linked to increased risk of cardiovascular disease and Type 2 diabetes. Fallacies
Tanned skin protects you against sunburn, thought to be the main cause of melanoma. Also, it’s more dangerous to avoid sun exposure completely than it is to get regular, moderate sun exposure. If you avoid getting sunburned, the benefits of sun exposure will far outweigh the possible dangers. Independent scientific research has shown that if you live in a sunny climate, or if you live in a not-so-sunny climate but expose yourself to sun, then your increased production of vitamin D due to UVB radiation will help lower risk of a host of debilitating and fatal diseases.
